Bulova Calendar Automatic ref. 8410 c.1979
1979 holds a special place in Bulova company history: it was the year Bulova changed hands for the first time and became a part of the Loews Corporation, ending their self-ownership that began in 1875.
Obviously, the massive quartz influx that hit full force during the decade took much of Bulova’s focus, but there were still some mechanical offerings in the time period, many of which took the Bulova name while also sporting the ‘tuning fork’ logo (that was traditionally only used on Accutron tuning fork/accuquartz models). Specimens in this kind of condition and style during a time period of battery-powered, gaudy, plated watches are not easy to come by.
This elliptical automatic model, powered by an ETA 2879-based day-date calendar motor, with quickset functionality, is a beauty. It registers at a split hair under 38mm, but is about ‘square’ in dimensions—meaning total length to width is basically 1:1—and has 18mm lugs. This makes for great wrist presence without any chance of hanging over the edge of the wrist. Because of this, it conforms more to the wrist and, therefore, tends to be more enjoyable to wear.
While the bracelet appears, integrated—smooth, flat links that comprise a thinner, comfortable design—it can be removed and replaced with leather or otherwise.
If you’re looking for a late 70’s model that isn’t the prototypical, late decade, funky chunky (at best), which are often not hard to find that are pleasant looking by modern standards, this will be one that can pull it off better than most!
Bonus: Bulova ‘Goddess of Time’ caseback, similar to the Snorkels and other top tier models from earlier in the decade.

Function - This watch is wound by the natural motion of your arm. It is recommended to wind the crown 15+ times to give an initial power reserve to last throughout the day.
[All vintage watches are expected to function as described. However, due to age and generally unknown service history (unless otherwise stated), these watches may not keep time as accurately as new or quartz (battery) watches. This is completely normal and does not indicate that there is a major problem. Like your automobile, all mechanical watches will likely need to be serviced at some point in time. Please keep this in mind, as there is no guarantee regarding when these vintage watches may need standard maintenance. Every watch sold by Buying On Time is done so with the expectation that it is not currently in need of service or repair, unless noted. We guarantee that all watches sold are accurately described and in the stated condition when they leave our hands.]
